Cologne is the largest university city in Germany, so if you choose to learn German in Cologne, you’ll be in good company! With over 70,000 students in the city, Cologne has a great nightlife and a thriving cultural life. And don’t forget to try out the city’s famous beer gardens, or the Chocolate Museum! Cologne is a regional capital for culture, so you’ll find lots of exhibitions, events and festivals to keep you busy during your German course! Cologne has many small scale festivals throughout the year, but the most famous is the Lent Carnival, which attracts over one million visitors to the city. Called the ‘Mad Three Days’, the city’s bars and restaurants stay open throughout the night, with dancing and parades in the city’s squares and streets!
The school is situated just west of the city centre, so it’s a great location to discover everything that Cologne has to offer! The school itself offers Wi-Fi access, a computer lab, student library and fully equipped kitchen. The classrooms are also equipped with projectors, tablets and computers to create interactive lessons and to help the students learn. Our highly qualified and experienced teachers are always available for help and further advice, whether it’s about the German language or what to see and do in Cologne!
Our language school in Cologne offers ‘Intensive’ and ‘Super Intensive’ German language courses of 20 and 25 lessons/week. Each lesson is 45 minutes long, completely immersing you in the German language. Classes usually have a maximum class size of 10 students (12 during the summer), but if you would prefer to study in a smaller group, a ‘Mini Group’ course with a maximum class size of just 5 students is also available.
Alternatively, you can attend a ‘Combined’ course of 20 German lessons, plus 5 or 10 private lessons/week. In each private German language lesson, you can concentrate on whichever German language skills you feel you need more practise at. Or if you want a completely personalised teaching course, the school offers individual tuition of 20 private lessons per week.
Our school in Cologne also offers Examination Preparation courses, so you can take an internationally recognised German language exam as part of your course. Students with an elementary level of German can prepare to take the Zertifikat B1 exam and students with a more advanced level of German can prepare to take either the Zertifikat C1 and C2 exams, or the TestDaf exam or DSH, which are widely recognised by German universities.
If you need to know German for your place of work, there is also the possibility to study Business German, which includes 3 or 6 lessons/week in additional to the Intensive group course. Please contact us if you are interested in Business German or the Exam preparation courses!
If you’re looking to discover more about German daily life, customs and cuisine and want to boost your speaking skills, you can stay with a German host family in Cologne. Your family will speak to you in German and help you practise the language that you learn in class in real life situations. The school carefully selects hosts and does their best to match them to your needs and requirements. Host family accommodation is available in a double or single room, and with the option of either bed and breakfast or half board (two meals each day).
Alternatively, students over the age of 20 years can opt to stay in a shared apartment where you will live with other students. Each apartment is fully furnished, and you will have access to a shared kitchen and bathroom. You can also choose between a double or single room. If selecting the more economical double room then you will be placed with a student from the school of a different nationality. If you’re after a bit more comfort, the school also offers a shared apartment “plus” option which offers similar shared apartments but with a washing machine, dishwasher and Wi-Fi.
For those looking for a greater level of independence, our Cologne school also offers private apartment accommodation. You can opt for either a studio apartment (self-catering apartments with a small kitchen and own bathroom) or a business apartment (3-star hotel standard, including fully equipped kitchenette, a private bathroom as well as further amenities). The minimum age for private accommodation is 18 years old.
The school offers a cultural programme with a minimum of three activities per week. Some of these activities in Cologne include: city tour, festivals, mini golf, water skiing, karaoke, soccer, BBQs, visits to the cathedral, markets, bars, brewery tours and day trips to other places of interest. A new activity programme for the week will be displayed on the school’s notice board every Monday. This program helps students to meet other people, develop their cultural awareness and, above all, use their newly acquired language skills outside the classroom!
