If you choose to learn Spanish in Cuenca, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the cultural capital of Ecuador. From museums and art galleries, to traditional Indian markets, Cuenca offers a truly authentic taste of South America. In Ecuador’s highlands, the city offers a wealth of historic architecture, so much so in fact, that the city centre has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite its history, Cuenca also has a modern edge and youthful atmosphere, thanks to the many cool bars and cafes.
Our Spanish language school in Cuenca is situated in a beautiful detached building overlooking the River Tomebamba. The school is very bright and offers six classrooms and wireless Internet throughout. There is even a lovely garden where the school often hosts barbecues and parties.
Each lesson at our school in Cuenca lasts 45 minutes and all students with previous experience of studying Spanish will take a level test on arrival to make sure that they are placed in a suitable group, with students of a similar level to themselves.
The ‘Intensive’ course of 20 group lessons per week is generally suitable for most students. The aim is to improve students’ overall level of Spanish and the emphasis is on the everyday, practical usage of the language (although, naturally, students do still cover all aspects of the language).
Private lessons can be added to a group course, or taken separately and are best suited to those who have a very particular focus for their course.
Students with at least an ‘intermediate’ level of Spanish may like to consider adding a period of volunteer work to their Spanish course. Please note that the language course must be taken for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the start of the volunteer work placement, which can then be arranged for a minimum of 4 weeks.
Host family accommodation in Cuenca is usually located within a maximum of 15 minutes’ walk of the school, which is very convenient not only for your lessons, but also for taking part in the activities programme. All host families are very well known by our colleagues at the school, who both select them very carefully and visit them regularly to make sure that students are accommodated in suitable environments. This accommodation option is offered on a full board basis and will allow you lots of extra practice in speaking Spanish with native speakers!
Alternatively, if you prefer to stay more independently, then we are also able to arrange hotel accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis.
Our school in Cuenca arranges regular activities for students attending language courses. Examples of typical activities arranged include dance and cookery lessons, culture and civilisation classes, trips to museums and historic monuments, and full-day excursions to places such as Ingapirca. The exact activities offered do change on a weekly basis and all are completely optional. Because of this, they are not included in the course price and so may incur an additional charge to cover costs.
Fly into Quito or Guayaquil Airport before then taking a connecting flight to Cuenca. We can arrange an airport transfer from either of these two airports, but please do note that as this service is not included in the course price, there is an additional charge. The airport transfer service from Quito or Guayaquil Airport includes one night of accommodation close to the airport followed by a connecting flight to Cuenca the following day (so students booking this service usually arrive in Ecuador on the Saturday before the course starts, aiming to arrive at their accommodation in Cuenca on the Sunday before their course starts). Please note that, as always, we strongly recommend that you do not make any travel arrangements until you have received confirmation of your course from ourselves.
