Our school in Munich (Historic Centre)

This language school is right in the heart of Munich, in the historic Altstadt-Leher district. The building’s central location means it’s just around the corner from attractions like the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art and the Munich Stadtmuseum, where you can learn more about the city’s fascinating history. Other world-class institutions - including the Kunsthalle art gallery, the Museum of Five Continents, and the Deutsches Museum - are just 10 minutes’ walk away. Munich’s ancient public square, Marienplatz, is only 500 metres from the school. This square is the home to the impressive town hall with its famous Glockenspiel; the clock’s 32 life-sized figures re-enact medieval myths several times a day. Less than 5 minutes’ walk from here is the Viktualienmarkt, site of a vast weekly market where almost anything can be bought. Locals will often stop here to buy ingredients for their evening meal, so it’s an excellent place to get some language practice.

Our Historic Centre school is located in a lovely 19th-century townhouse which has 8 large, bright classrooms. There is a reception area where you can access the school’s free multi-media learning resources and get assistance or advice from our friendly colleagues. Computers are available for completing homework, catching up with friends and family back home, or simply surfing the web. The building also has a kitchen that students can use to store food and drinks or prepare basic snacks, and there is a vending machine serving hot drinks. The nearest public transport links are just a few minutes’ walk from the school’s doors, so you can easily enjoy the city’s many delights once your lessons have finished.

Founded in 1984, this language centre has over 30 years’ experience teaching German to international students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. It is a member of global quality-control organisations like the International Association of Language Centres (IALC) and the Association of German Language Schools and Language-Tour Operators (FDSV). Its courses are also approved by the Swedish government for CSN funding. These credentials make this school an excellent choice for an immersive language course. When you learn German in Munich’s Historic Centre, you’ll benefit from this facility’s expertise and resources and get to study right in the middle of this exciting Alpha City.

Munich

Munich is Germany’s third-largest city, an eclectic metropolis located at the foot of the Bavarian Alps. This city of art and culture is equal parts historic and futuristic, with ancient architecture and renowned museums blending seamlessly with avant-garde structures like the BMW Museum and the Olympiapark complex. Locals call the city ‘Millionendorf’ - the ‘village of a million people’ - for its charming and intimate atmosphere. It’s this atmosphere, with its distinctly bohemian twist, which makes this city such an exciting location for a language course. When you learn German in Munich, you’ll study in the heart of the historic centre and thus be surrounded by iconic attractions like the Rathaus at Marienplatz and the impressive Frauenkirche cathedral. You’ll discover urban oases like the enormous Englischer Garten and the Old Botanic Gardens, and view world-class art in the city’s many galleries. You can put your new language skills into practice as you experience Munich as the locals know it, from its vibrant nightlife and many shops to its weekly Viktualienmarkt. By studying in this way, you’ll find that you quickly improve your German knowledge - after all, the best way to learn a language is to live it.

Munich’s origins date back to around the 8th century, when this huge city was a humble monastic settlement. By the 15th century, it had grown into a lively trading city; as such, it was chosen as the capital of Bavaria, a title it retains to this day. As the focal point of Germany’s largest state, Munich’s historic prestige has made the city a key centre of cultural life. Foreign dignitaries, religious leaders, scientists, and creatives have flocked to the city over the centuries, and many have been instrumental in moulding Munich into what it is today. Dotted with fine town houses and impressive palaces, and home to the world-renowned venues like the Staatsoper and the sprawling Kunstareal museum district - with its wealth of exciting and interesting exhibits from around the world - this city is a culture vulture’s delight.

Besides this rich history, Munich offers a wide variety of more contemporary attractions, from shops for all tastes and budgets to a diverse range of eateries. Maximilianstrasse is particularly known for finery, with its designer boutiques and luxury stores, while the streets by the riverbank are the best for alternative fashion and modern cafés. Munich is also well-known for its lively and alternative nightlife. The best bars and clubs are around Sonnenstrasse, an area known as der Feierbanane - ‘the party banana’ - for its curved shape and dynamic atmosphere. Perhaps Munich’s best-known attractions are its biergartens - these cheery, tree-covered places first opened in the 19th century and have since become an international symbol of the city. Here, you can experience the particularly German feeling of Gemütlichkeit, a cosy sense of warmth and well-being characterised by chatting together on communal tables, sampling classic German beers and regional favourites like Weisswürste (white sausages) Steckerlfisch (grilled fish). No visit to the city would be complete without a stop in one of these distinctive establishments!

Whatever you do with your time in Munich, you’ll have lots and lots of opportunities for language practice; by studying in this way, you’ll find that you improve your German skills in no time at all.

Courses in Munich (Historic Centre)

Available courses

The core German course offered by this school is the Intensive programme of 20 group lessons per week. Classes take place in the morning, between 09:30 and 13:00 each weekday (afternoon classes may be offered during busy periods, between 14:30 and 18:00). You’ll study with people of the same ability level in groups of up to 12; this small class size allows you to get lots of attention from the teacher and plenty of language practice. Such a methodology means you’ll improve rapidly, however long you study for. This course is available for 1 - 36 weeks, so you can book as much tuition as you need to achieve your desired ability level.

For a more rigorous programme, select the Intensive 25 course and have an additional 5 weekly classes focused on communication. Your extra lessons are also restricted to just 12 students, so you’ll still benefit from the teacher interaction offered by these small class sizes. In these extra lessons, you’ll get even more speaking and listening practice, so this course will have you chatting with confidence in no time!

Please note: if you have little to no previous experience of learning German, you must begin your language course on an appropriate date. Feel free to contact us for further information on beginners’ start dates.

For maximum language practice and teacher interaction, select private tuition. The standard package consists of 20 one-to-one classes per week, though bespoke packages are available on request. Since you can tailor your lessons to your own needs, private lessons are particularly suited to those who want extra support with their studies or those who want to cover specialist topics like medical or business German. However you use these lessons, you’ll find that you make unparalleled improvements on a private course.

While one-to-one lessons are best in terms of development, they don’t offer the social experience of group tuition. Fortunately, you can combine the best aspects of both course types with an Intensive + Private package! By adding 5 or 10 classes private classes per week to your core Intensive course, you can enjoy the social side of group classes and still experience the language benefits of private tuition.

Alternatively, between October and June you can attend a Mini-group Intensive course. These lessons follow the same structure and materials as the standard Intensive programme, but in classes of up to just 6. At half the size of standard classes, these lessons offer twice the language practice opportunities; this course is therefore ideal for students who want to benefit from extra teacher interaction whilst still having a social learning experience.

German is known for its long and often difficult-to-pronounce words. If you feel that you’re struggling with this aspect of the language, select this school’s Intensive + Pronunciation course and add 3 or 6 semi-private lessons per week to your core general German programme. Your extra lessons will focus specifically on helping you to perfect your pronunciation; since you’ll be just one of 2 students in these additional classes, you’ll have a high level of both language practice and teacher interaction, so you’ll quickly improve. This course is particularly recommended for highly proficient students who retain their native accent, though it is available to all levels.

If you’re learning German for work, or if you plan to work in a German company, our school’s Business German course will endow you with the required skills to excel in your role. Combining the general Intensive course with 3 or 6 semi-private lessons per week, this programme will help you to improve your overall language knowledge and give you the opportunity to cover topics and vocabulary relating to the German world of work. This course is available to students with at least A2 starting ability, so isn’t suitable for complete beginners. Your extra lessons can also be used to cover the following topics: economics, medicine, tourism, law, and engineering.

If you plan to apply to a German university, you’ll need to sit the TestDaF exam to demonstrate your language proficiency. Our Munich Historic Centre school can help you get ready for this test on its specialised TestDaF Exam Preparation course. When you book this programme, you’ll develop your general language skills on the standard Intensive course and attend 3 or 6 semi-private lessons per week where you can cover exam-related topics and sit practice papers. By studying in this way, you’ll be in an excellent position to pass your exam with flying colours! You can use your additional lessons to prepare for other German-language exams including telc, Zertifikat B1/B2/C1/C2, and DSH. This course is available throughout the year for 1 - 4 weeks; please note that exams are not taken at the school.

This school also offers an excellent Work Experience programme, combining free Intensive tuition for 4 - 12 weeks with 20 hours per week working in the school’s office. This is a great way to gain some invaluable life skills whilst significantly improving your German proficiency; since you’ll be working with and using the language throughout the day, you’ll find that you develop even quicker than you would do with a standard tuition programme. Internships are unpaid and available between October and June to students with at least B1 ability level. Feel free to contact us for more information.

On your first day, you should arrive at the school at 09:00. You will have already submitted a level test to determine your German ability prior to arrival. After you have registered, your results will be verified with a short oral assessment. In this way, the school can ensure that you are placed in the most appropriate group for your starting level. This methodology will give you the best opportunity to improve, regardless of how much previous experience you have or how long you study for. Once you have been assessed, you will be given your course materials and a school information pack; your classes will begin as soon as all students have arrived and been placed.

After class, you can take part in the school’s activity programme. At the end of your course, you’ll receive a certificate of achievement which can be used to demonstrate the German ability level you have reached during your time at the school.

    Accommodation

    Available accommodation

For the most immersive experience, stay with a local homestay host during your time in Munich. Hosts are all native German speakers, so when you select this option you’ll be able to continue learning and using the language even outside the classroom. Our hosts live up to 40 minutes from the school by public transport; they offer private single or twin* bedrooms and access to the home’s communal spaces including the lounge and bathroom(s). Rooms are offered on a breakfast-included or half-board basis (breakfast and dinner each day). We highly recommend the half-board package as it is not only cost-effective but also gives you guaranteed social time with your host(s) in the evening, thus maximum language exposure. You will only have access to the kitchen if you book a self-catering package. Bed linens and towels will be provided by your host(s) and changed regularly; you can use the home’s laundry facilities for a small fee. Most hosts offer Wi-Fi access, but you should let us know at the time of booking if this is a requirement for you. You will have your own key to come and go as you please, but you must respect house rules and schedules.

If you’d rather stay with other students while you study, you can book shared apartment lodging and do just that. Apartments are located around the city and may be up to 30 minutes from the school by public transport; you’ll be placed based on availability at the time of booking, so we cannot guarantee the location of your lodging. When you select this option, you’ll have a private single or double* bedroom and share the kitchen and bathroom(s) with the other residents. Rooms are offered on a self-catering basis, giving you the freedom to cook for yourself or sample local eateries as you prefer. Bed linens are included but towels are not, so you should bring your own. You can use the apartment’s washing machine to do your laundry. Most apartments have Wi-Fi but some do not; please let us know at the time of booking if this a requirement for you. All apartments incur a €300 security deposit on arrival, which will be returned to you on departure providing your room is left in a suitable condition. Please note that this option is not available to students under the age of 20.

For totally independent lodging, select a studio apartment and have your own private space with a bathroom and fully equipped kitchenette. Apartments may be located up to 30 minutes from the school by public transport; students are placed based on availability at the time of booking, so we cannot guarantee the location of your lodging. Different apartments have different facilities; please let us know at the time of booking if you have any requirements regarding this. Bed linens are included but towels are not, so you should bring your own. Your apartment will either have a washing machine or be close to a local laundrette. Double-occupancy apartments are available for two students travelling together. All apartments incur a €300 security deposit on arrival, which will be returned to you on departure providing your room is left in a suitable condition. Please note that this type of lodging is not available to students under the age of 18.

*Twin rooms are only available to students travelling together. If you select a shared room but are travelling alone, you will be swapped to a single room.

      Activities

This school arranges various social and cultural activities in the afternoons, evenings, and at weekends which will complement your language tuition. These activities will teach you about German history and culture and give you hands-on experience of life in Munich. All activities are held in German, so they have the added benefit of maintaining your language immersion and allowing you to put your newly developed skills into practice in real-life scenarios.

Many activities are available free of charge, though some may incur an additional fee to cover entrance and/or transportation costs. The exact schedule changes throughout the year but may include:

Because I had only two weeks I didn't expect to gain a great deal of knowledge. However, I found that I had more than enough with which to work on my own during the next year. After that, I hope to return to Germany for more training.

The accommodation was very comfortable and suitably furnished, so enhanced a pleasant stay. As the people I shared with did not feel confident to speak German at home, we spoke in English, if people really want to use the language, either putting students of the same ability in one flat or staying with a host family is a better idea
