That being said, you’ll still be within easy reach of Munich’s best attractions. These include Schloss Nymphenburg to the west, which has extensive verdant grounds which are free to visit. With public transport links just round the corner from the school, you can be in the city centre within 30 minutes and enjoy sites like the English Garden, the Pinakothek museum complex, and Marienplatz, Munich’s ancient public square, home of the impressive town hall and regular street markets. Not far from these is the the Deutsches Museum, the world’s largest science and technology museum.

The school building is a medium-sized facility with 21 classrooms. Its key feature is its on-site residence, which offers clean and comfortable bedrooms. By staying here, you’ll be in the heart of this lovely area and can jump straight out of bed and into class! The school’s Lernstudio language lab has a selection of student computers and is available for extra-curricular study, while a student lounge offers a place to relax and socialise after class. There are vending machines serving hot and cold drinks, and a cafeteria where you can buy hot and cold snacks. A small private garden with bicycle racks is available for student use.

Munich

Take a German course in Munich, an eclectic cosmopolitan city on the edge of the majestic Bavarian Alps. Dubbed ’Millionendorf’ by the locals - ‘the village of a million people’ - Munich feels intimate and charming despite being Germany’s third-largest city. Its bohemian arts scene, vibrant nightlife, and futuristic structures like those at the Olympiapark are complemented by its medieval architecture and renowned galleries and museums. The city’s atmosphere is perhaps best described by the German term Gemütlichkeit, a cosy feeling of warmth, well-being, and friendliness that is epitomised by Munich’s famous beer gardens. These cheery, tree-covered places first opened in the 19th century and have become an international symbol of the city. Sit on communal tables and chat with the locals, sample a classic German beer, and try regional delicacies such as Weisswürste (white sausages) or Brezn mit Obatzda (soft pretzels with cheese dip) - what could be better?! If you prefer more active pursuits, rent a bicycle and discover Munich’s many, many delights, or head out into the countryside and enjoy stunning vistas as far as the eye can see. Whatever you do, you’ll have an immersive experience like no other.

Munich takes its name from a monastery which once dominated Alstadt-Lehel, the bustling city centre. By the 14th century this small religious settlement had become a lively trading city and the seat of the Wittelsbach royal dynasty, whose home - the sprawling Residenz complex - is the largest city palace in Germany. Near here is the Frauenkirche, Munich’s iconic cathedral. Its tall domed towers and bright, tiled roof are symbols of the city itself, while its rich collection of European art draws visitors from around the world. This impressive structure is fitting for the capital of the huge county of Bavaria, a title Munich has held for over 500 years. Its prestige has made the city a favourite with artists and musicians, scientists and academics, and philosophers and inventors. Many have left their mark on the city, whether by building fine town houses and impressive palaces or by creating artworks displayed in its world-class museums and pieces of music performed in the Staatsoper. With its sprawling Kunstareal museum district, housing a wealth of exciting and interesting exhibits, Munich is truly one of the key cultural hubs of Europe.

In more recent history, Munich has become a technological power house, home to two research universities, many international institutions, the world’s largest science museum, and engineering masterpieces like the BMW Museum. Its student population has encouraged the development of a wide selection of alternative shops and eateries as well as a lively and diverse nightlife. The best bars and clubs can be found around Sonnenstrasse, an area commonly referred to as der Feierbanane - ‘the party banana’ - for its curving shape and dynamic atmosphere. A short walk from here, you’ll find Glockenbachviertel, an eclectic district that’s home to fashionable bars, quirky shops, and the city’s LGBTQ+ community. If you want to escape the noise, head north to the English Garden, one of the world’s largest urban parks. Boasting 3.7 km² of green space, 75 km of walkways and cycle paths, a Japanese teahouse, various streams and waterways (one which can be surfed!), an open-air theatre, and a restaurant with a beer garden that can accommodate 7,000 people, it’s no wonder this garden is one of the city’s most famous attractions! Your experiences in Munich will give you lots and lots of opportunities for language practice, which will help you significantly improve your German skills - after all, the best way to learn a language is to live it!

Courses in Munich

Available courses

The standard German course in Munich is the Intensive programme of 24 group lessons per week. Classes take place in the morning, between 09:45 and 13:00 on Mondays and between 08:30 and 13:00 Tuesday to Friday. You’ll study with people of the same starting ability in groups of no more than 15; this limited class size means you’ll get lots of attention from the teacher and plenty of language practice, allowing you to improve quickly. In the afternoon, you’ll have 2 guided self-study sessions in the school’s Lernstudio; here, you’ll have access to a wealth of online and offline resources which complement your group tuition. Teachers are on-hand during these sessions should you have questions. This course is available for 1 - 36 weeks, so you can book as much tuition as you need to achieve your desired ability level.

Please note: if you have little to no previous experience of learning German, you must begin your language course on an appropriate date. Feel free to contact us for further information on beginners’ start dates.

If you want to develop your German skills as much as possible during your time in Munich, private tuition will help you reach your goals. Choose between 10 or 20 one-to-one classes per week and have unparalleled language practice through maximum teacher interaction. Since you can tailor your lessons to your own needs, private lessons are particularly suited to those who want extra support with their studies or those who want to cover specialist topics like medical or business German.

Though private tuition will help you excel quickly, it doesn’t offer the social experience of a group course. Fortunately, this school offers Intensive + Private packages, so you can combine the best parts of both programmes! By adding 5 or 10 weekly one-to-one classes to your core group course, you’ll be able to enjoy the social side of group classes and still benefit from additional language practice with private tuition. As part of the group course, you can also attend 2 weekly Lernstudio workshops and use the school’s excellent learning resources to develop even further.

If you want to sit the TestDaF exam so you can apply to a German university, you can get ready for your test in Munich. The specialised TestDaF Exam Preparation course consists of 20 targeted group classes per week; in these lessons you’ll improve your general German knowledge, cover exam-specific topics, and sit practice papers before being given detailed feedback from your teacher. By studying in this way, you’ll be in an excellent position to pass your exam with flying colours! This course is available for 4 weeks on set dates based on annual testing dates; you can even sit your test at our school once the course is finished (exam fee not included in programme price). You will need to have reached B2 level to be eligible for this course. Preparatory courses for telc C1 exams are also available; please get in touch for more details.

On your first day, you should arrive at the school at 08:30. You will have already submitted a level test to determine your German ability prior to arrival. After you have registered, the results of this test will be verified with a short oral assessment. This methodology ensures that you are placed in the most appropriate group for your starting level, which will give you the best opportunity to improve, regardless of how much previous experience you have or how long you study for. Once you have been assessed, you will be given your course materials; your classes will begin as soon as all students have arrived and been placed.

After class, you can take part in the school’s activity programme. At the end of your course, you’ll receive a certificate of achievement which can be used to demonstrate the German ability level you have reached during your time at the school.

    Accommodation

    Available accommodation

To get the maximum linguistic benefit from your time in Munich, we recommend staying with a local homestay host. Hosts are all native German speakers, so when you select this option you’ll be able to continue learning and using the language even outside the classroom. Our hosts live up to 60 minutes from the school by public transport; they offer private single or twin* bedrooms and access to the home’s communal spaces including the lounge and bathroom(s). This option is available on the following meal packages: self-catering, breakfast-included, or half-board (breakfast and dinner each day). We highly recommend a half-board package as it is not only cost-effective but also gives you guaranteed social time with your host(s) in the evening, thus maximum language exposure. You will only have access to the kitchen if you book a self-catering package. Bed linens and towels will be provided by your host(s) and changed regularly; your host(s) will either do your laundry for you or let you use the home’s facilities once a week. Most hosts offer Wi-Fi access, but you should let us know at the time of booking if this is a requirement for you. You will have your own key to come and go as you please, but you must respect house rules and schedules.

If you’d rather stay with other students while you study, you can select a room in the school’s on-site student residence. You’ll have a single or double* bedroom and share a kitchen and bathroom with the other residents. Rooms are offered on a self-catering basis, giving you the freedom to cook for yourself or sample local eateries as you prefer. Bed linens and towels are included; your room will be cleaned weekly, and you are responsible for washing the towels and sheets. Coin-operated laundry facilities are available in the building. The residence has Wi-Fi access. This type of lodging incurs a security deposit on arrival; the amount will be confirmed in your travel information document and returned to you on departure providing your room is left in a suitable condition.

For total independence, select a studio apartment and have your own private space with a bathroom, kitchen, and lounge. Apartments may be located up to 60 minutes from the school by public transport; students are placed based on availability at the time of booking, so we cannot guarantee the location of your lodging. Different apartments have different facilities; please let us know at the time of booking if you have any requirements regarding this. In your studio, bed linens and towels will be included. Your apartment will either have a washing machine or be close to a local laundrette. Double-occupancy apartments are available for two students travelling together. This type of lodging incurs a security deposit on arrival; the amount will be confirmed in your travel information document and returned to you on departure providing your room is left in a suitable condition.

*Twin rooms are only available to students travelling together. If you select a shared room but are travelling alone, you will be swapped to a single room.

      Activities

To complement your German tuition, this school arranges a selection of social and cultural activities in the afternoons, evenings, and at weekends. These activities will teach you about German history and culture and give you hands-on experience of life in Munich. All activities are held in German, so they have the added benefit of maintaining your language immersion and allowing you to put your newly developed skills into practice in real-life scenarios.

Many activities are available free of charge, though some may incur an additional fee to cover entrance and/or transportation costs. The exact schedule changes throughout the year but may include:

      - Guided city tours
      - Visits to popular attractions such as the Olympic Stadium, the Englischer Garten, the Deutsches Museum, and Nymphenburg Castle
      - Group meals and/or picnics
      - Local-produce-tasting
      - Visits to local markets
      - Group games and/or sports
      - Half- and full-day excursions to local points of interest such as Salzburg, Lake Chiemsee, and Landsberg
      - Plus seasonal activities available in the city

      How to get there

Munich International Airport is around 35 minutes’ drive from the city centre and is easily accessible from many worldwide locations.

From here, you can make your own way to your lodging or you can book an airport transfer service on arrival. If you select this service, a driver will be waiting for you when you land and will take you directly to your accommodation. If you select this service on departure as well, you will be collected from your accommodation and taken back to the airport in time for your departing flight.

You should arrange to arrive in Munich on the Sunday before your course starts and to depart on the Saturday after it finishes. We may be able to arrange extra nights on arrival and/or departure for you if needed.

It was very good, it covered all the habilities: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The material used in the course was really good also.

The accomodation was OK, I had a room for me, but had to share kitchen a bathroom. For me it was sufficient for the 2 weeks I've spent there.

Very good. Sometimes we have played too much during the classes instead of learning new stuff, but i've learned a lot in three weeks. In the accommodation the cupboard was broken and the lock from the door as well, I couldn't lock myself up during the night. The situation of the school was perfect and also the underground combinations. The activities program could be a little bit better but i find super good the fact that we could attend a "lernstudio" in the afternoons to learn even more.

It really helped with grammar and the teachers were very helpful. But it started too early in the morning.

I was absolutely thrilled with the course. I feel I learned a lot and was particularly happy with the verb wheel we all got to keep as it is going to be very useful in the future. My teacher was very friendly an helpful and there was a very pleasant atmosphere in the classroom everyday, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Accommodation was excellent. Location was great with the train station so close to our door. Our house lady was so helpful and friendly, honestly don’t think I could have been any luckier! The house itself was spotless and we could always feel at home! Had my own key also which was great as I was free to come and go as I pleased. Food was also excellent. Was provided with all types of food for breakfast but also had the facility to use the microwave, kettle etc. if I wanted. It was brilliant!
