Our school in Munster

When you learn German in Münster with us, you’ll study in a medium-sized facility on the edge of the city centre. Directly behind the school is the Promenade, a lovely, shaded ring of walking trails and bicycle paths which encircles the city. Just 10 minutes’ walk away are key attractions including Münster Stadtmuseum - where you can learn more about the city’s past - the Rathaus, and the nearby St-Paulus-Dom cathedral. In the centre, you’ll also find lots of shops, restaurants, and cafés where you can put your language skills into practice with the locals and try regional delicacies. Further out of the centre, but easily accessible from the public transport links close to the school, are the beautiful University Botanical Gardens, the city zoo on the banks of the river, and the Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History.

Our partner school is located on a wide, tree-lined avenue which forms part of Münster’s ring road. Lessons take place in a large building on a small commercial block that’s home to lots of local businesses. There is a communal bicycle storage area outside; inside, the facility has 15 large, bright classrooms and several self-study rooms. The school’s computers can be used for completing homework, getting in touch with friends and family back home, or simply surfing the web. Multi-media learning resources are also available and will help you excel in your studies. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building.

For over 25 years, this school has been teaching German to students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Since it is a member of global quality-control organisations like the International Association of Language Centres (IALC) and the Professional Association of German as a Foreign Language (FaDaF), we can guarantee that the standard of tuition offered here is very high. Our partner school is a widely-recognised telc and TestDaF test centre, and its courses are approved by the Swedish government for CSN funding. When you choose to study German here, you’ll be learning from highly experienced teachers and immersing yourself in life in the city, which will help you reach your desired goals in no time at all.

Munster

In many ways reminiscent of Oxford and Cambridge, Münster is a delightful university city and therefore an excellent location for an immersive language course. While several areas in the centre have a charming, medieval feel - particularly around Domplatz, where traditional German architecture abounds - the city is also lively and vibrant. When you learn German in Münster, you’ll discover its interesting shops, quirky eateries, and colourful bars and clubs, as well as the wide variety of festivals and exhibitions the city hosts, from one of Europe’s largest flea markets to annual arts fairs which attract creatives from around the world. Especially in summer, this relatively small city is a beautiful and bustling paradise. Münster is widely known as Germany’s Bicycle Capital; its huge number of dedicated paths and trails make it both safe and enjoyable to explore. One of the best ways to see the city is by cycling, walking, or rollerblading down the Promenade, a 4.5 km tree-lined boulevard which follows the route of the ancient city walls. Besides all that you can do here, the German spoken in this region is often said to be accent-free, so this city is a great study destination for learners of all levels.

Münster takes its name from an 8th-cenutry monastery on the banks of the River Aa. A community rose around the monastery, and within one hundred years the town was home to a cathedral, a marketplace, a library, and a school. From these humble beginnings, Münster has developed into a thriving modern city and a major European centre for excellence in education and research. Its university is now one of the largest in the country and is a leading voice in the arts and humanities, the sciences, business, and law. The students who come from around the world to study here contribute to the city’s youthful and culturally diverse atmosphere, while campus sites like the Botanical Gardens are popular with locals and tourists alike.

Despite experiencing heavy bombardment during WWII, much of Münster’s oldest architecture has been painstakingly rebuilt and remains true to the original. Some surviving structures include the impressive St Paul’s Cathedral, which dominates the city’s skyline. This basilica is worth a visit even if you’re not religious - it’s home to a large collection of historic art and artefacts, as well as a stunning astronomical clock that’s considered to be one of the finest examples of its kind. Twice a week, food and crafts markets take place in the cathedral’s shadow; this is an excellent opportunity to get in some authentic language practice and perhaps buy a souvenir. The nearby Prinzipalmarkt is the place to go for more upmarket trinkets and luxury brands. Lined with gabled merchants’ houses and sheltered walkways, this beautiful cobbled street is Münster’s main shopping area. It’s also home to the city’s imposing town hall, the site of the signing of the Peace of Westphalia, a series of treaties which ended the Thirty Years’ War and established modern European relations.

For a taste of the more modern side of Münster, head to the harbour, which is fast becoming a nightlife hotspot and which is home to a host of fashionable restaurants and independent cafés. You can catch a German-language film in the Cineplex here, or attend a late-night show on one of the events barges that are moored in the harbour. The Arkaden mall is an excellent spot for some retail therapy, while the Natural History Museum’s Planetarium will teach you all you need to know about the universe and space science. If you want to experience more of Germany, key cities like Cologne and Hamburg are just 2 hours’ away by train; on the way, you can witness some of the country’s gorgeous countryside! However you spend your time in Münster, you’ll find that your immersive experience will be both enjoyable and educational, and you’ll come away with significantly improved language skills.

Courses in Munster

Available courses

This school’s standard German programme is the Intensive course of 20 group classes per week. Lessons take place in the morning between 09:00 and 12:30 each weekday, in groups of no more than 12. This small class size means you’ll get lots of attention from the teacher and plenty of language practice. Since you’ll be studying with other pupils of the same ability level, you’ll start making improvements straight away. This methodology helps to ensure that you significantly develop your language skills, however long you study for. This course is available for 1 - 36 weeks, so you can book as much tuition as you need to achieve your desired ability level.

For a more rigorous programme, the Intensive 24 course offers an additional 4 weekly classes, which are held twice a week between 13:30 and 15:00. These extra lessons follow on from the standard German programme, giving you even more language practice and even more time with the teacher. Since there are just 2 days of additional lessons, you’ll still be able to enjoy lots of free time in and around Münster.

Please note: if you have little to no previous experience of learning German, you must begin your language course on an appropriate date. Feel free to contact us for further information on beginners’ start dates.

If you’re looking for as much language practice as possible, private classes will be best for you. The standard package consists of 20 one-to-one lessons per week, though bespoke packages are available on request. With unlimited teacher interaction, you can tailor your classes to your own specific needs and thus make unparalleled progress. The nature of private tuition means that it’s particularly suited to those who want extra support with their studies and those who want to cover specialist topics like medical or business German. Semi-private lessons are available for two students with the same level who are travelling together.

While one-to-one tuition offers maximum opportunities for development, it doesn’t provide a very social learning experience. Fortunately, you can combine the best aspects of both course types on the Intensive + Private package! By adding 10 weekly private classes to your core Intensive course, you can get to know your fellow students via group lessons, without missing out on the language benefits of private tuition. Your one-to-one lessons will take place in the afternoon; your exact schedule will be confirmed on arrival.

If you plan to attend a German university, you’ll need to sit the TestDaF exam to demonstrate your language proficiency. You can get ready for this test on our school’s specialised TestDaF Exam Preparation course. The programme consists of 13 exam-focused lessons per week, which can be added to your Intensive 20 or Intensive 24 course. Your preparatory classes take place in the afternoon and cover exam-related topics and techniques; you’ll also have the chance to sit past papers and get detailed feedback about your answers from your teachers. By studying in this way, you’ll be in an excellent position to pass your exam with flying colours! You can even take the exam at our school once your course has finished (test fee not included in programme price). This course has set start dates based on the year’s available testing dates, and is only suitable for students with B2 or higher German ability. Preparatory lessons can also be used to get ready for a telc exam; please contact us for more details.

If you haven’t yet reached B2 level, but you still plan to study at a German university, our school’s University Preparation course will help you improve your skills to the required level. You’ll have 24 group lessons per week over 12, 24, or 36 weeks - the amount of time you study for will depend on your starting ability and the entry requirements of the institution to which you are applying. This course is suitable for students of all ability levels, including complete beginners, and has set start dates throughout the year. Please contact us for further information.

On your first day, you should arrive at the school at 09:00. After registering, you will sit written and oral level tests to determine your starting ability level. In this way, the school can ensure that you are placed in the most appropriate group for your German level. This methodology will give you the best opportunity to improve, regardless of how much previous experience you have or how long you study for. Once you have been assessed, you will be given your course materials and further information about the school and its facilities. Complete beginners will begin their classes after this introduction; lessons for all other levels will begin on the following day.

After class, you can take part in the school’s activity programme. At the end of your course, you’ll receive a certificate of achievement which can be used to demonstrate the German ability level you have reached during your time at the school.

    Accommodation

    Available accommodation

Staying with a local homestay host offers maximum language immersion, since all hosts are native German speakers. This accommodation option therefore allows you to continue learning and using German even outside the classroom. Our hosts live up to 30 minutes from the school by public transport; if you prefer to be closer to the language centre, you can select a host within 2 km for a small additional fee. All hosts offer private single or twin* bedrooms and access to the home’s communal spaces including the lounge and bathroom(s). Rooms are available on a breakfast-included or half-board basis (breakfast and dinner each day, with lunch also provided at the weekend). We highly recommend the half-board package as it is not only cost-effective but also gives you guaranteed social time with your host(s) in the evening, thus maximum language exposure. Bed linens and towels will be provided by your host(s) and changed regularly; you can use the home’s laundry facilities to wash your clothes. Most hosts offer Wi-Fi access, but you should let us know at the time of booking if this is a requirement for you. You will have your own key to come and go as you please, but you must respect house rules and schedules.

If you’d prefer a little more independence, you can book shared apartment lodging and have a private bedroom in the home of a local German speaker on a self-catering basis. This is a great option for someone who wants the opportunity to stay with local people whilst still having the freedom to cook their own meals or sample local eateries as they prefer. Please note that, since you do not have guaranteed social time with your ‘hosts’ at mealtimes, this type of lodging offers fewer opportunities for immersion than homestay lodging. Apartments are located around the city and may be up to 30 minutes from the school by public transport; as standard, you’ll be placed based on availability at the time of booking, though you can select an apartment within 2 km of the school for a small additional fee if you prefer. Bed linens and towels are included and changed regularly; you can use the apartment’s washing machine to do your laundry. Most apartments have Wi-Fi but some do not; please let us know at the time of booking if this a requirement for you.

Private apartments are available on request. Possible apartments vary in size and cost; please get in touch with us if you’d like to explore this option.

*Twin rooms are only available to students travelling together. If you select a shared room but are travelling alone, you will be swapped to a single room.

      Activities

As well as high-quality language tuition, this school arranges various social and cultural activities in the afternoons, evenings, and at weekends. These will teach you about German history and culture and give you hands-on experience of life in Münster. Since all activities are held in German, they have the added benefit of maintaining your language immersion and allowing you to put your newly developed skills into practice in real-life scenarios.

Many activities are available free of charge, though some may incur an additional fee to cover entrance and/or transportation costs. The exact schedule changes throughout the year but may include:

      - Walking or bicycle city tours
      - Visits to popular attractions such as the Münster Zoo, the National History Museum, and Münster Cathedral
      - German film screenings
      - Dance and/or yoga classes
      - An afternoon at Aasee Lake
      - Board-game or billiards nights
      - Meals and/or drinks with your class
      - Group sports
      - Half- and full-day excursions to local points of interest such as Cologne, Bonn, and Hamburg
      - Plus seasonal activities available in the city

      How to get there

The city has its own airport, Münster Osnabrück International, which is around 25 minutes’ drive from the city.

From here, you can make your own way to your lodging or you can book an airport transfer service on arrival. If you select this service, a driver will be waiting for you when you land and will take you directly to your accommodation. If you select this service on departure as well, you will be collected from your accommodation and taken back to the airport in time for your departing flight. Transfer services are also available at Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Bonn airports.

You should arrange to arrive in Münster on the Sunday before your course starts and to depart on the Saturday after it finishes. We may be able to arrange extra nights on arrival and/or departure for you if needed.

The school gave me confidence to achieve my goals. The teachers were really nice and available at anytime for us. I met new friends for life as well ! :) A very good experience, adventure that I'll definitely live again :)

I lived with the owner and two other german students. They were friendly and helped me a lot with the german language and also with the citytrip :)

I'd like to thank people in this organization that really helped me to overcome my fear of not being too good to learn a specific language.

It was really useful, I only went for one week, which is too short, I am planning to go another week. The teacher was very kind and even helped me when I did not understand, as he spoke a little bit of Dutch too.

Herr und Frau Knipp have been wonderful hosts. I must confess that I was a bit scared going to a host family, but they were kind and really cared.i

I would like to say Big Thanks to Stephanie who really went the extra mile to get me on a course last minute. Thanks so much for your help. My mother says you are an example of Putting the Customer First, thanks.
