English courses in New York City

Learn English in New York City, one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world! Located on the east coast of the United States, New York City is famous for its rich cultural heritage and is also home to some of the world’s most recognisable landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and Times Square, amongst many, many others.

New York City is also hugely important in terms of business and diplomacy. Home to both the United Nations’ Headquarters and Wall Street, one of the most influential financial centres in the world, doing business here really does place you at the centre of the world economy.

Our English school in New York City is located on Broadway in Manhattan’s Midtown, close to Times Square and the New York Public Library. This is the perfect location for students who wish to combine their English course with the opportunity to explore this magnificent city.

Our school offers excellent facilities for students, including 16 classrooms, free wireless Internet, access to the school’s 24 computers, library facilities, a self-study room and a student lounge. You do not even need to venture far to find something delicious for lunch, as there is a fantastic deli located downstairs.

Our English courses in New York City

We select the schools that we work with very carefully, to be sure that they are able to offer our students the high-quality teaching and professional student care that we expect. Therefore, you can be certain that, whichever course you choose, you will be taught by a native English-speaker who is both fully-qualified and experienced in teaching English to international students. On arrival at the school, you will take a short level test, the results of which will allow our colleagues at the school to place you in the correct group, with students of a similar level to yourself. After this, you will have a welcome breakfast and a short orientation meeting and your lessons will usually start the following day.

Most students choose one of our group courses, as these courses focus on improving the overall level of the language. All four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) are covered, although there is usually a focus on the practical usage of the language, which does mean that you can expect to do plenty of speaking and listening. There are three options with regards to group courses. Which one you choose will depend on how much progress you wish to make in the time that you have available, and how much time you wish to spend in lessons each day. Lessons always take place from Monday to Friday, except in the case of public holidays.

The Intensive course of 20 lessons per week does tend to be the most popular, as it offers a fantastic balance between the time spent in the classroom and the time spend actually using the English learnt at school in everyday, practical situations. Lessons on this course will either take place in the mornings or in the afternoons and this will be determined by the group in which you are placed after you have taken the level test on arrival.

The Intensive course of 24 lessons per week consists of the 20 group lessons as above, plus 2 further lessons twice-weekly (so, an additional 4 lessons per week in total). These additional lessons will work on consolidating what you are learning and should just give your English a further boost.

The Super-Intensive course of 30 lessons per week also consists of the 20 group lessons as above, plus 2 additional lessons per day. The school will offer you a choice of themes for these additional lessons, usually focusing on an aspect of the language, such as speaking or writing, or an aspect of the American culture, such as music or film.

If you already have a good level of English and would like to work within an English-speaking environment, then our Business English course is the ideal choice for you. This course consists of 30 lessons per week: 20 lessons focusing on improving your overall level of English and 10 lessons per week concentrating on Business English. Examples of areas covered include: negotiating contracts; management and HR; branding and promotional strategies; project management; and company budgets. You will also learn how to interview well, make business telephone calls and give presentations in English.

Perhaps you currently have a good level of English and are preparing to take the TOEFL or Cambridge exams? If so, our exam preparation courses of 30 lessons per week will concentrate on getting you ready.

Accommodation in New York City

In addition to your language course, we can also arrange your accommodation if required. Our school in New York offers a choice between host family and student residence accommodation.

If you really want to experience life as a local and make as much progress as possible with your English, then we would recommend host family accommodation. All the host families are very carefully selected and well known to our colleagues at the school. They are normally located within New York’s five boroughs (Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens), although some may be located in New Jersey. The average journey time from host family accommodation to the school is 60 minutes by public transport. If you do opt for host family accommodation in Manhattan, this is likely to be closer, although please note that this is more expensive and is only offered on a bed and breakfast basis (half board accommodation can be arranged in other locations around New York City).

Student residence accommodation is usually most popular amongst students aged 18-28 years, as they do tend to be comfortable, but fairly basic. The school actually offers three different types of residence; two of which are offered year-round and one of which (the university residence) is only offered during summer. All three types are offered on a self-catering basis and you will have access to a communal kitchen.

Student residence accommodation is offered in single or shared rooms. If you are travelling alone and are aged 18-28 years, you can choose to share the room with another student of the same gender. This is the most basic of the three residence options, as you will share the kitchen and bathroom with other students. However, there is wireless Internet access available and you will also have free access to the fitness centre. This accommodation type is located at a maximum of 25 minutes from the school by subway.

Student residence plus accommodation offers rooms with an en-suite bathroom. You will be able to prepare your meals in a communal kitchen. Again, this residence also offers students wireless Internet and access to a fitness centre. The distance from the school varies from approximately 10 minutes walk to a maximum of 25 minutes by subway.

University residence accommodation offers shared rooms with an en-suite bathroom. Rooms all have air-conditioning and heating and offer a fridge and microwave, as well as cable TV. You can also use the communal kitchen to prepare your meals. The greatest attraction of this residence is the location, in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, very close to the Museum Mile and Central Park. This residence also offers wireless Internet access and a fitness centre.

Cultural activities in New York City

Our school offers regular activities which you can choose to take part in. The exact programme does vary week by week and our colleagues will confirm to you on arrival what will be offered during your stay. Examples of typical activities arranged include visits to local places of interest (such as museums, art galleries, theatre shows and monuments), meals out in local restaurants, English-language film evenings and excursions to places such as Boston and Washington D.C.

As activities are optional, they are not included in the course price and, therefore, they will usually incur a small additional charge. This is payable to the school and is usually to cover costs, such as entrance fees and transport. Please also note that most activities will require a minimum number of participants in order to run.

How to get there

Fly into one of the three main airports, JFK, LaGuardia and Newark. From here, you can either make your own way to your accommodation by public transport, or we can arrange an airport transfer for an additional charge.
