Learn Spanish in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic!

Santo Domingo is a Caribbean city on the Dominican Republic’s beautiful southern coast. The country’s capital, Santo Domingo is a buzzing, energetic city and the cultural heart of the Dominican Republic. This Spanish speaking city dates back to the time of Christopher Columbus, is packed full of places of historic interest with Boca Chica, one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, just 30 minutes’ drive away.

Centred around the Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is home to the oldest cathedral in the Americas, amongst other historically important sites, Santo Domingo is purported to be the oldest continually inhabited European settlement in the Americas. This is quite an achievement considering how the city has been squabbled over by so many nations throughout its history! Santo Domingo is by no means an historic relic, however. The city pulses with the rhythms of Merengue and Bachata, colourful festivals and vibrant nightlife.

Our Spanish school in Santo Domingo is located in the University Zone, which is, of course, an area that is really geared towards students, with plenty of cafes, restaurants and a library. The school is also just a short drive (approx. 10 minutes) from the Colonial Zone, where you will find many of the city’s cultural attractions. The school sits in a lovely garden, with several terraces and even a cafeteria where students can purchase refreshments.

Our Spanish language courses in Santo Domingo

Our Spanish school in Santo Domingo offers a range of courses, including group and private lessons, as well as a fantastic ‘Spanish + Dance’ course.

The ‘Intensive’ course consists of 20 group lessons per week, in small groups of a maximum of 7 students per class. Of course, when you arrive at the school, unless you are a complete beginner, you will take a level test which will allow you to be placed in a suitable group, with students of a similar level to yourself.

The ‘Super-Intensive’ course consists of 30 group lessons per week so is a great option if you only have a short time available and want to make as much progress as possible.

A very popular option is the ‘Spanish + Dance’ course, which combines 20 Spanish lessons with 4 dance lessons per week. Dance lessons take place at a professional dance academy close to the language school. The dance styles usually taught are Merengue, Bachata and Dominican Salsa.

Accommodation in Santo Domingo

In Santo Domingo, you can choose to stay with a carefully selected host family, in a shared apartment, or in a hotel.

Our recommendation for students wanting to make as much progress as possible, or indeed those that wish to increase their confidence in speaking Spanish, is to stay with a host family. Host families are all native Spanish speakers and the school select them very carefully, to make sure that they offer suitable accommodation for students and that they will make the students feel comfortable enough to practice their Spanish on them. Most host families live within a maximum of 30 minutes from the school by public transport.

The shared apartment accommodation is very conveniently located just 2 minutes’ walk from the school. Each apartment usually has 2 or 3 bedrooms, as well as a shared bathroom, kitchen and general living area. There is normally wireless Internet access.

Hotel accommodation offers a choice between self-catering and bed and breakfast. Both types of hotel accommodation are located within 10 minutes’ walk of the school.

Cultural activities

Our school offers students the opportunity to take part in optional activities a couple of times per week. These activities are ideal for meeting your fellow students and will also give you extra Spanish practice! Examples of typical activities offered include barbecues, meals out in restaurants, trips to concerts, visits to museums, sightseeing tours and excursions to the beach and other places of interest such as Las Terrenas. Please note that there may be an additional charge payable directly to the school to cover costs and there is usually a minimum number of participants required in order to run the activity.

How to get there

Fly into Santo Domingo Airport. From here, you can either take public transport to your accommodation, or we can arrange an airport transfer for you (please note that this service is not included in the course price and will, therefore, incur an additional charge).
