Barcelona offers the best of both worlds and is an ideal location for a Spanish course for young students! A large city with plenty of history and culture to discover, Barcelona also offers beautiful sun-drenched beaches, making it one of the best coastal cities in Europe! Climb magnificent Montjuïc, where buildings built for the 1992 Olympic Games rub shoulders with the Poble Espanyol, which showcases nearly 200 years of Spanish architecture, or stroll through Park Guëll, one of Gaudi’s masterpieces that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A creative city, Barcelona is sure to inspire, from the dream-like Sagrada Familia to the Nou Camp, home to one of Europe’s top football clubs!
Our Spanish school in Barcelona is located very close to the famous Casa Milà or La Pedrera (as it is sometimes called), one of Gaudi’s famous buildings. Located where Passeig de Gracia (one of the most exclusive streets in Spain) and Avinguda Diagonal (one of the city’s main thoroughfares) cross, it would be difficult to find a more convenient location.
Housed in a traditional Spanish townhouse, the school not only offers bright, spacious classrooms and an on-site residence, but also has some lovely balconies and even a roof terrace! There is also a student lounge and water, tea and fresh fruit are also provided free of charge.
Students take 20 Spanish lessons per week in groups of up to 15 students per class. A level test is taken on arrival to make sure that all students are placed in the correct group for them with students of a similar level. The teacher will then target the content of the lessons to meet the requirements and level of his/her group.
Teachers are all native Spanish speakers and fully qualified to teach Spanish to international students. This is a total immersion course and so students will be encouraged to speak Spanish at all times, including on activities and in their accommodation.
Students taking this programme can choose between student residence and host family accommodation. Both accommodation options tend to be equally popular and so it really is down to personal choice as to which to choose.
Student residence accommodation is offered on-site and supervisors also stay in the residence to ensure that students have 24 hour support. Rooms are normally shared between 4-6 students of the same gender and of different nationalities (as far as availability permits). All meals are provided and the main meal will usually be in the evening.
Host families are very carefully selected to ensure that they will offer warm, welcoming and safe environments for young students. They are all native Spanish speakers and will encourage students staying with them to practice speaking Spanish as much as possible. This is an excellent opportunity to increase confidence and also offers students the opportunity to experience how locals live. Students will normally stay in twin or triple rooms and will eat their breakfast and evening meal in their accommodation. Lunch is usually eaten at the school. Host families can be located in different areas around Barcelona and it is very normal for students to have to take public transport to reach the school. A local bus pass is included in the course price and host families will ensure that students understand how to travel to the school. The average journey time is about 30 minutes and the maximum journey time is 45 minutes.
Activities are offered on a daily basis to ensure that students have fun whilst studying Spanish! The programme varies slightly from week to week, but typical activities include guided tours of the city, parties, arts and crafts workshops, dance lessons and bowling. The school also normally arrange one full day excursion per fortnight, to places such as Sitges and Montserrat. Activities on this programme are included in the course price and students are expected to attend. The activities will be conducted in Spanish, so as well as being entertaining, they will also provide students with more opportunities to practice speaking Spanish outside of the classroom.
The school take student safety very seriously and so, for this reason, offer a high level of supervision. Students will be supervised when in lessons, on activities and in their accommodation. There will usually be 1 supervisor for every 15 students. Please note that students staying with host families are expected to make their own way between the school and the accommodation, but hosts will ensure that students are comfortable with making the journey.
Whilst airport transfers are not included in the course price, we can arrange them for an additional fee. Please note that if the airline requires the student to travel as an unaccompanied minor, you will also need to book the school’s unaccompanied minor service for an additional charge. This will ensure that a responsible adult assists the student with check-in and remains at the airport until the flight departs, as per the airline’s normal requirements.
