Benalmadena, on Spain’s famous Costa del Sol is the perfect place to combine sun, sea, sand and Spanish! An attractive town in the foothills of the Mijas Mountains and close to Malaga, Benalmadena is an historic location with plenty of attractions. There are three main areas: Benalmadena Pueblo is a typical Andalusian white village; Benalmadena Costa is a more modern area with several leisure facilities including hotels, shops, an aquarium and a marina; Arroyo de la Miel is home to Tivoli World amusement park and a cable car up to Calamorro Mountain, offering spectacular views across the area.
Our Spanish school in Benalmadena is located in Arroyo de la Miel, in a modern building, just 10-15 minutes’ walk from Tivoli World amusement park. The school offers excellent facilities for students, including 13 fully-equipped classrooms, a library, a multimedia room, a cinema room, a student lounge, a small cafeteria with a lovely terrace and air-conditioning throughout.
Lessons usually take place in the mornings, with activities in the afternoons. Your lessons will be in Spanish from the very beginning, as will your activities. This will mean that you are surrounded by the language for the duration of your course, which will improve your listening comprehension and should also improve your confidence in speaking. It should also help you to understand how to use the language in everyday, practical situations.
You will learn Spanish in a group with students of a similar level to yourself, as you will all take a level test on arrival. Your fellow students will be of a similar age to you (13-17 years) and could be from all over the world! Your teachers will be native speakers who are fully qualified in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. They will also be experienced in teaching the language to students of your age, so you can be sure that lessons will be fun and engaging, which will motivate you to learn.
You will arrive on the Sunday before your course starts and depart on the Sunday after your course finishes. During the time you are in Benalmadena, you will stay with a very carefully selected host family and will be provided with all your meals. You will share your room with another student from the course, usually of a different nationality (subject to availability). Your hosts will be native Spanish speakers, who are experienced in hosting international students of your age. They will be well known to our colleagues at the school, who make sure that they are kind people with suitable accommodation and they will continue to visit them regularly during the time they are working with them.
Your hosts may be a ‘traditional’ family with children, or they may be an older couple or single lady. Your host family will live close to the school, within a maximum of 15 minutes by public transport.
It is important that you make us aware of any preferences, allergies, dietary requirements or medical conditions at the time of booking, so that our colleagues may place you with the most suitable host family.
You will certainly have a fantastic time in Benalmadena thanks to the school’s extensive activities programme! Your lessons will usually be in the morning, finishing around 13.00. Lunch is taken at 14.00 and that hour in between (except on Friday) is usually spent taking part in sports, or learning a Latin dance such as flamenco. After lunch, you will have more activities, such as sports, trips to the beach, swimming, boat trips to places such as Fuengirola (where you can do some shopping), or trips to the cinema. One day each week (usually Wednesdays), you will have a half-day excursion in the afternoon to places of interest nearby, such as Malaga, Mijas, Nerja or Marbella.
You will return to your accommodation around 19.00 and will eat dinner and spend some time with your host family until around 21.30. Three evenings per week the school will arrange evening activities, such as parties at the school and games evenings. Two evenings during the week, and at weekends, you will have some free time between 21.30 and 23.00/0.00, when you will be expected to return to your accommodation.
On Saturdays you will have a full day excursion to places such as Ronda, Seville, Granada or Cordoba. If a public holiday falls during your course, you will not receive lessons on that day, but the school does normally arrange a full-day excursion.
You will be fully supervised during your time at our school in Benalmadena, whether you are in class, on activities or in your accommodation. You will be permitted some free time, however, the curfew is strictly imposed and you will be expected to respect this.
Airport transfers from/to Malaga Airport are included in the course price for students arriving on the Sunday before their course starts and departing on the Sunday after their course finishes. Please note that these courses do fill up very quickly and so we do advise that you book the course and wait to receive confirmation before making travel arrangements.
