Germany’s capital, Berlin, is one of Europe’s most dynamic cities. Having spent decades divided in two, the city was reunited when the famous wall came down in 1989, and has not looked back since! It is true that West and East Berlin have very different characters, but both are equally as exciting. Get a taste of former West Berlin by strolling along the magnificent Unter den Linden, an impressive boulevard that will take you from the Cathedral on Museum Island along to the iconic Brandenburg Gate. Former East Berlin is characterised by Soviet-style architecture, but despite the stark appearance, is a hub of lively creativity.

Teenagers love Berlin because it is a cool city that combines a tumultuous and endlessly fascinating history with cutting edge design. As well as museums and art galleries, there is also fantastic shopping, whether it is at one of the many flea markets or the shopping paradise of Kurfuerstendamm, Berlin’s answer to the Champs-Elysées.

It is close to this famous boulevard that the typical German villa in which this programme takes place is located. In central Berlin, the centre is relatively small, with room for 40 students, making it very easy to meet your fellow students.

Young Students’ Course in Berlin Villa

This course consists of 20 lessons per week which take place every morning (Monday to Friday), each lesson lasting 45 minutes. Your level will be assessed on arrival at the school to make sure that you are placed in the correct group with students of a similar level to yourself. The lessons will focus on improving your overall level of German and so you will cover all aspects of the language. However, as the course follows a ‘communicative’ method, there is an emphasis on the everyday, practical usage of the language and so there will be plenty of speaking and listening.

The teachers are all native German speakers and are fully qualified to teach German as a foreign language to international students of all levels. They are very experienced in teaching students of your age and so will know how to make the lessons fun and engaging for you, thereby giving you the best chance of improving as quickly as possible.

Accommodation

You will be accommodated on-site, in shared rooms with up to 4 other students of the same gender. As far as availability permits, the school will try to mix nationalities, to try to encourage you to use German as your common language. Bathrooms are shared and you will be provided with all your meals, which will be served in the villa’s cafeteria. Supervisors will also live on-site and so will be on hand 24 hours per day to provide any support that is required. Your accommodation will be arranged from the Sunday before your course starts until the Sunday after your course finishes.

Activities

Activities will be arranged each afternoon and evening and will be encouraged to use German whilst taking part. This means that as well as helping you to meet other students and explore the local area and culture, these activities will also help you to improve your confidence in speaking German. Examples of typical activities arranged include: walking tours; shopping; barbecues; games evenings; swimming in Lake Wannsee; badminton; sightseeing and shopping in Mitte; cycle tours along the Berlin Wall; film evenings; discos; and full-day excursions to places such as Potsdam and Castle Sanssouci. You are not obligated to join in with the activities if you do not want to, although they have been designed for your particular age group and so most should be of interest to you. On Sundays, you will have free time to relax with friends, or to go into the city centre.

Supervision

Whilst you are in lessons, on activities or in your accommodation you will be fully supervised. Members of staff live on-site so that there is always someone available to assist you. You will be permitted some unsupervised free time and, with parental permission, may be allowed to separate from the main group when on excursions (in pairs or small groups). You will be required to respect the curfew, which is 23.30 during the week and 01.00 at the weekends.

Airport Transfers

Transfers are included in the course price from/to all Berlin Airports and Stations.
