Bishop’s Stortford is a small, charming market town in Hertfordshire, situated close to Cambridge. It is a compact and very safe destination for our Young Students, who will learn English in a quiet residential area of the town, just 10 minutes walk from the town centre.
The school building has private grounds and beautiful gardens, including 15 classrooms, a dining room, student common rooms, a large hall for social events and an arts and crafts room. There is an indoor basketball court on campus, outside playing fields for other sports and there is also a swimming pool close by. The bedrooms are located on campus, with shared bathrooms and students have access to computers with internet access, to keep in touch with family and friends.
The summer course for young students is open in July and August each year and offers a programme of 20 general English classes each week, in addition to a huge range of activities every day. The classes are held in the mornings on 5 days per week. On Thursdays and on Sundays there is a full-day excursion (except on the day of your departure). You will study with other students of the same age group and language level, in groups of 16 students maximum. The native English teachers are highly qualified, with years of experience in teaching English to students of a young age. The academic content of the programme is carefully structured to ensure that the lessons are interesting, fun and dynamic.
The campus accommodation provides a secure and comfortable environment in shared bedrooms of between 2 and 4 international students per room, with shared bathrooms and showers. There are separate buildings on campus for boys and for girls. The school staff have over 14 years of experience in caring for international students living away from home and they also live on-site, providing 24 hour supervision, safety and assistance at an adult-to-student ratio of approximately 1:7. All meals are provided in the school’s own dining room. There is a large selection of hot and cold meals and a vegetarian option each day. During excursions the students receive a packed lunch and there is an evening snack before bedtime as well. Please mention any special dietary requirements or allergies at the time of your booking. Clothes laundry is included in the cost of the programme.
Activities are scheduled as a compulsory part of the summer course and there are activity sessions taking place five days a week in the afternoons and seven days a week in the evenings. There is a huge range of sports such as swimming, tennis, rounders, volleyball, basketball and ultimate frisbee. Some of the sports take place in the local park. Students will have the opportunity to try a range of arts and crafts such as clay sculpture, t-shirt design, circus workshops, glass painting and making masks. Other activities include bowling, cultural visits, local walks, quizzes, movies, board games and parties. Full details of the activities programme will be available at the time of your booking, depending on the dates and duration of your course. There are 2 full-day excursions every week to other cities or attractions close by, such as Cambridge, Warwick Castle, to Cadbury’s World and to London.
There are members of staff available 24 hours to support students, whether it is during the class times, during the afternoon programme, or for the evening activities. There is usually one teacher or supervisor for every 7 students on campus and so this programme offers a high level of supervision and care. Students are only permitted to leave the campus for the school activities and excursions, or when accompanied by a member of school staff.
You can arrive into Stansted or London Heathrow airport and a member of staff at the school will meet you and take you to the school. The transfer is included in the course price, together with the return journey and help with the check-in on your departure. Transfers can also be arranged on arrival into other airports, however, please note that there is an additional fee for this.
