Learn French in Montreal in the world’s second largest French-speaking city! Montreal is also a centre for Francophone culture in North America, making it a fantastic choice for your French young students’ course. This is a vibrant city that really resonates with teenagers, famous as it is for its film industry, gastronomy and numerous festivals!
Montreal’s long history is documented in the vast array of architecture that lines her streets. As well as many cultural attractions including museums and art galleries, the city offers fantastic shopping and plenty of sporting events with popular teams! In addition to this, Montreal is surrounded by spectacular landscape, with some of the most picturesque views found at the top of Mount Royal, from which the city derives its name.
Although it is true that the French spoken in Canada is a little bit different to that which is spoken in France, Canada is still an ideal option for a French course for teenagers, especially if Europe is a little far to travel to. Francophone Canadians grow up watching films and television shows from France and will speak ‘international’ French to non-Canadians. Our schools will teach you this form of the language, which you will then be able to use to speak with any Francophone, regardless of where they are from. Of course, our colleagues will point out any key differences that arise, which will only enrich your understanding of the French language and its global reach.
You will attend 20 lessons per week which will be conducted in French from the outset, fully immersing you in the language from day one. As mentioned above, you will be taught ‘international’ French, which is the standard that will allow you to converse with any French speaker of any nationality. Your teachers will be native French speakers, who will be fully qualified to teach the language to international students. When you arrive at the school you will take a short level test which will determine the group that you are placed in, and the other students in your group will all have a similar level to yourself.
You will stay with a carefully selected host family who will provide you with your own room and full board (i.e. all your meals). You will share the bathroom and general living area with your hosts. Your hosts will be native French speakers who will welcome you into their home and will encourage you to practice speaking French with them everyday. Our colleagues at the school will know your host family well as they regularly visit them to make sure that they are still offering suitable accommodation to all students. Montreal is a large city, so you should expect to need to take public transport to the school. The average journey is 35 minutes and a local bus pass is included in the course price.
Your accommodation will run from the Sunday before your course starts until the Saturday after your course finishes.
This programme includes daily activities, which will not only keep you entertained but will give you even more opportunities to practice speaking French in practical situations. Examples of typical activities include city tours, swimming, bowling, kickboxing, wall climbing, museum trips, yoga and canoeing. The school also arranges one full-day excursion every fortnight, to an amusement park, for example.
Supervision will be provided during your lessons, activities and in your accommodation. Please note that you will be expected to travel to and from the school independently and most evenings you will have free time, so this programme does require that you are able to act in a mature manner and respect the restrictions placed on you by your hosts (such as your curfew, for example).
Return airport transfers are included in the course price from/to Montreal Airport.
