Historic Salamanca is located in north-western Spain, close to Madrid. This location is very popular amongst Spanish students as the locals are said to speak ‘pure’ Spanish. What this means in real terms is that students should find locals relatively easy to understand as there is no strong, regional accent. In the community of Castile y Leon, this is the cradle of the standard version of Spanish, also known as Castilian.
Salamanca is a very old city, with fantastic architecture attesting to that fact. However, it retains a youthful atmosphere, thanks to the large student population, many of whom attend the city’s university which is the oldest in Spain!
Our Spanish school in Salamanca for students aged 13-16 years is located just 5 minutes’ walk from Plaza Mayor, the focal point of the city. The school offers excellent facilities for students including 8 spacious classrooms, air-conditioning throughout and a library/multi-media room.
You will have 20 group lessons per week from Monday to Friday, each lesson lasting 45 minutes. You will cover all aspects of the language in order to improve your overall level, although there will be an emphasis on the everyday, practical usage of the language (so you will get to do lots of speaking and listening). Your teacher will also give you homework each day.
Your teacher will be a native Spanish speaker and will be fully qualified to teach Spanish as a foreign language to students of all levels. Your teacher will also be experienced in teaching teenagers and so will do their best to make sure that your lessons are fun and engaging, whilst also helping you to achieve the maximum progression possible.
If you have previous experience of studying Spanish, you will take a level test on arrival at the school. Our colleagues will use the results of this to make sure that you are placed in the most suitable group, with students of a similar level to yourself. Teaching will be in Spanish and you will be encouraged to use Spanish at all times during your course.
During your course you will be accommodated by a Spanish-speaking host family. You will share a room with another young student of the same gender and will be provided with all your meals. Your hosts will have been very carefully selected by our colleagues at the school, who know them well. Our colleagues visit every family prior to working with them to make sure that they are kind, friendly people who will welcome students and encourage them to practice speaking Spanish with them. Our colleagues will also have inspected the accommodation itself to make sure that it is suitable and safe for students of your age and continue to visit them throughout the time they are working with them in order to ensure that this remains the case.
Host families usually live very close to the school, so you should not have to walk for more than 20 minutes to the school. Host families do come in all shapes and sizes, so yours may be a ‘traditional’ family (i.e. parents with young children), or they may be older couples or even single ladies.
Activities are arranged every day, usually in the afternoons after your Spanish lessons. The activities programme changes each week, but some examples of typical activities offered include visits to museums, swimming, parties at the school and excursions. You will normally be permitted some free, unsupervised time in the evenings, although you will need to return to your accommodation by 23.00.
You will be fully supervised at all times when you are at the school, on activities or excursions and in your accommodation. You will travel between the school and your accommodation unaccompanied (although normally you could expect to travel with your roommate) and you will also have some free time, particularly in the evenings. However, you will be expected to adhere to the curfew set by the school.
Airport transfers are included from/to Madrid Barajas Airport. Please note that in order to take advantage of the transfer service you will need to arrive into Madrid Barajas Airport before 16.00 on the Sunday before your course starts and depart from the same airport after 12.00 on the Saturday after your course finishes. Please note that availability for our young students’ courses do tend to fill up very quickly and, therefore, we do advise that you wait until you receive confirmation of the course from ourselves (which usually takes 1-2 working days after the time of booking) before making travel arrangements.
