Tarragona, on Spain’s north-eastern coast is a fantastic alternative to its neighbour, Barcelona. Just as packed full of history and culture, Tarragona is a much smaller and calmer location, making it a wonderful choice of location for a Spanish course for teenagers. An important Roman settlement, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks is the amphitheatre which overlooks the Mediterranean.
Tarragona is also home to some spectacular beaches, some of which have been designated Blue Flag beaches. There are also some excellent restaurants serving fresh seafood and traditional Catalan dishes.
Centrally located in the city centre, our Spanish school in Tarragona is housed in a traditional townhouse at less than 10 minutes’ walk from the school and is close also close to the city park. There are 7 spacious classrooms, a dedicated study area and a student’s lounge.
We specialise in offering total immersion courses and this programme is no different. From the very beginning of your course, everything will be conducted in Spanish, including your lessons and activities. This will mean that you will be speaking and listening to Spanish for the duration of your course, which should really improve your communication skills!
You will have 15 Spanish lessons per week, in small groups of no more than 12 students. As you will take a level test on arrival at the school, you will only ever be in a group with students of a similar level to yourself. Your teacher will then make sure that the lessons are targeted both to the group’s level and requirements. Although there will be an overall emphasis on the everyday, practical usage of the language, you will cover all aspects, so as to improve your overall level.
You can choose between host family and residence accommodation. Whichever option you choose, you will be provided with all of your meals.
Host family accommodation is a fantastic choice if you would like some extra practice in speaking Spanish with native speakers. Your hosts will welcome you into their home and will treat you like a member of the family. You will share your room with another young student, with whom you will travel to and from the school. Your hosts will have been very carefully selected by our colleagues at the school, who visit all their host families regularly to make sure that the accommodation that they offer is still safe, suitable and comfortable for students.
Student residence accommodation is very centrally located in the city centre and is just 15 minutes’ walk from the school. Rooms are shared between 2 or 3 students of the same gender and the bathroom facilities are shared. The residence also has a TV lounge, computer room, study rooms and a gymnasium. Laundry facilities are available for a small charge.
Activities are arranged on a daily basis and will be conducted in Spanish so as to give you extra speaking and listening practice! The activities will vary slightly from week to week, but some examples include an orientation walk on arrival, waterpark trips, visits to the Roman walls/aquaduct, beach trips, tapas workshops, bowling, treasure hunts, Roman workshop and Sevillanas dance lessons. Excursions are also regularly arranged to places like Barcelona, Port Aventura and Salou. You will normally have some free time: for example, on Fridays you will usually have the afternoon free to do some shopping.
Regular evening activities are also arranged, such as talent competitions, arts and crafts, bingo nights and karaoke.
Supervision will be provided at all times whilst you are in lessons, on activities and in your accommodation. You will have some free time during your course in Tarragona, although please note that you will be required adhere to the school’s curfew. If you are aged 13-14 years, you will need to return to your accommodation by 22.30 during the week (Sunday to Thursday) and by 23.30 during the weekend (Fridays and Saturdays). If you are aged 15-17 years, you will need to return to your accommodation by 23.30 during the week (Sunday to Thursday) and by 0.30 at the weekends (Fridays and Saturdays). Please note that if you stay with a host family, they may ask you to return home a little earlier than this. The curfew is taken very seriously by the school, as it has been put in place for your safety.
Airport transfers are included in the course price for students arriving into Barcelona Airport between 08.00 and 22.00 on the Sunday before their course starts and departing from the same airport from 08.00 and 22.00 on the Saturday after their course finishes.
